Community:
San Mateo is a city of approximately 90,000 located 20 miles south of San Francisco. It is an extremely diverse community, crossing all socioeconomic and ethnic lines.
School:
San Mateo High School is one of seven schools in the San Mateo Union High School District. The San Mateo High School student body reflects the diversity of its enrollment district. Its ethnic distribution is:

Caucasian 581 42.9%
Hispanic 350 25.85%
Asian-American 242 17.88%
African-American 83 6.13%
Pacific Island 65 4.8%
Filipino 32 2.37%
Indian/Alaskan 1 .07%

Current enrollment in grades 9-12 is approximately 1,425. A typical graduating class numbers about 350.

San Mateo High School is accredited by the Western Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges
In 1994 the WASC Committee granted a six year accreditation to San Mateo High School.
In 1991 San Mateo High School was designated a National Distinguished Blue Ribbon school by the United States Department of Education.

Grades:
The academic calendar is two semesters, of 18 weeks each.
Classes meet three times a week. Twice for 100 minute periods and on Fridays for 44 minutes periods.

Grading is on a 4.0 point scale.
Grading point average and class rank (unweighted) are computed in January of the senior year. All courses taken in 9th, 10th, and 11th and first semester of the 12th grade, including PE are used.
